Earlier today it was reported that Google+'s popularity has soared into the millions -- 25 million to be exact. A new report from AFP (ironically, via Google News) claims that the social networking service from the world's largest search giant has grown faster than Twitter, MySpace, and even Facebook when it first launched. According to Mashable, it took Facebook and Twitter around 36 months to achieve those numbers. These are amazing statistics for Google, considering the service is actually so niche and invitation-only.
But, can we be honest here? How many Google+ users are still using the service on a regular basis? Personally, I keep forgetting to log in and check what's going on. Initially, I was really excited about Google+ because it was something new and fresh, but now that some time has passed, I've hardly touched it. That makes me wonder: while Google's claiming 25 million users, what percentage of these "users" are actually "using" Google+?
Google+'s 25 million might seem like peanuts compared to Facebook's 750 million, especially when you factor in that, according to Facebook, at least 50% of those 750 million log in on a daily basis -- that's at least 375 million active users a day. Google recently confirmed online (and in an email from a Google spokesperson) that at least 10 million users, or 40% of its user base are logging in on a daily basis -- that's pretty good for a spankin' new social network that's only been around for a few months.
If you were a college student around the time Facebook came to fruition, you may recall that it took awhile (as aforementioned, close to 36 months) before Facebook really caught on with the masses. Heck, it even took awhile for the site to allow those with non-college assigned emails to log on. The site didn't really hit its growth spurt until much later.
There is something to Google+, but will it dethrone Facebook like it took down MySpace? Are you even using Google+? If you are, what do you think of it now that you've had some time to find a place for it in your life? Leave a comment and tell us what you think!
