SMS Spoofing Protection Tips for Indian Telecom Comapanies !

SMS Spoofing is today's biggest challenge for every telecom company. In India especially there is not a single company that provides complete protection against SMS Spoofing attack, and this is the thing to worry. Two main reasons are there why all companies are unable to prepare a bulletproof plan against this attack.

1. Hard Cyber Laws  2. Big Investment on the name of Security

Hard Cyber Laws
Here we are not talking about the laws for SMS spoofers , but laws for the telecom comapnies to implement a hard tracking gateway for sms spoofing. Untill Govt. issues a hard law to implement the security mechanism telecom companies will not take it serious also.

Big Investment on the name of security
Another big problem especially again in India, that we neglect security. Companies not paying much on security aspects when it comes to user facilities. Their main concentration is on providing the service but not providing it in secure way.

Protection against SMS Spoofing for Telecom Companies
From my point of view the only best way companies can adopt for detecting and blocking spoofed messages is to monitor all incoming mobile originated SMSs to check that the sender is a valid user and that the SMS is coming from a genuine  and correct location.

Companies can do that by adding an intelligent routing function to the telecom network that can ask originating subscriber details from the HLR before the SMS is submitted for delivery address.
But again problem still exists that this kind of intelligent routing function is beyond the capabilities of today's Companies SMS infrastructure, and if they have it too then it need a long time to implement.

How to Trace Computer's Location using IP Address?

We are Again Putting an Article On Tracing Using IP.

IP NetInfo to find information about an IP address. IP Locator is anotherfreeware application from the TCPMONITOR website for finding all informationabout a particular IP address. By using this utility software, you are ableto find the owner of the IP address, the country or state name, range or evencontact information. The application uses the wois server of ARIN by sendingrequest to their server. I think this application is a real good utility for gathering the information about an IP. You need to download two small files, one is the IP Locator setup.exe file and the other one is the GeoLiteCity.dat file. Download them from the links below:

IP Locator v1.0 (1.2Mb)

GeoLiteCity (8.3Mb)

or download from the official website:

IP Locator

After installing the IP Locator, extract the GeoLiteCity zipfile and copy and paste in the IP Locator installation directory.

To find available information about an IP address, run the program and click on Trace IP Location icon.

In Find IP window enter your desired IP address and hit the OK button.

To see detailed information, click on whois IP button.

Facebook Considers Lifting Ban on Kids Under 13 Years Old !

Facebook's ban on kids under the age of 13 is sort of like most DRM policies; all it does is keep some of the honest ones out. Nevertheless, whether for legal purposes or a sense of moral responsibility, Facebook as seen fit up to this point to disallow, at least officially, children who haven't hit their teen years from joining the most popular social networking site on the planet. That might soon change.
A report in The Wall Street Journal suggests Facebook is currently testing mechanisms that would tie a child's account to that of their parents', giving mom and pop ultimate control over their friends list, applications, and other features.
Why do it? Cold, hard cash, of course. WSJ says the under-13 features could give Facebook a way to monetize minors, flipping parents the bill for games and other content. Perhaps another reason is that blocking kids is ultimately a losing battle, in terms of enforcement.
"Recent reports have highlighted just how difficult it is to enforce age restrictions on the Internet, especially when parents want their children to access online content and services," Facebook toldWSJ.
Facebook speaks the truth, but let's not, uh, kid ourselves. This is about the money, and Facebook is under pressure to sustain profitability after forging ahead with its (lackluster) initial public offering (IPO). Mark Zuckerberg and company have investors to answer to, and by inviting game playing children to the fold, Facebook would gain another steady source of revenue.
Do you think Facebook should lift its ban on kids under 13?

Dell Launches Inspiron 14z Ultrabook, 'Fashionable' Inspiron 15R and 17R Laptops !

The very last thing in the world students heading out into summer vacation want to think about right now is the fact they'll have to go back to school in a few months. Parents, however, know the back-to-school season is coming, and they're the ones Dell is pitching its "tailored line-up of Inspiron laptops" to, including Dell's first Inspiron Ultrabook model, the 14z.
Dell's 14z rolls off the lot with a Core i3 processor, though you can upgrade to a Core i5 or Core i7 Ivy Bridge processor before driving it home. It's only Dell's second Ultrabook model, joining the XPS 13, and it sports a brushed aluminum finish in Moon Silver or (later this summer) Fire Red. A baseline build weighs 4.12 pounds and measures 0.83 inches at its chunkiest point. And if that's too big, Dell also announced a 13-inch version (13z) that weighs 3.81 pounds. Pricing starts at $700 for the 14z and $600 for the 13z.
In addition to Ultrabooks, Dell today rolled out new Inspiron 15R and 17R laptops with high definition displays and a variety of processor, memory, and storage options. They also feature optional color SWITCH lids, Intel Wireless Display technology, and Waves MaxxAudio 3 sound processing. Special Edition versions up the ante with Full HD displays, Blu-ray options, Skullcandy speakers, and Nvidia graphics options (17R). Pricing starts at $550 for the 15R ($900 for the Special Edition) and $600 for the 17R ($1,300 for Special Edition).

World IPv6 Launch Gives Crowded Internet Much Needed Breathing Room !

If you're reading this, you must be online, and if you're online, let us say 'Welcome to a larger Internet.' Today kicks off theWorld IPv6 Launch event organized by the Internet Society and intended to bring major internet service providers (ISPs), home networking equipment manufacturers, and web companies around the world together to enable and embrace the IPv6 protocol for their products and services.
Count Google among them. As the sultan of search points out, few could have imagined that the Internet today would serve nearly 2.5 billion people and 11 billion devices when it was launched operationally back in 1983. But that's what happened, and suddenly the Internet is running out of addresses.
As constructed, there's room for around 4.3 billion addresses. Internet Protocol version 6 expands that number exponentially, to "about 340 trillion, trillion, trillion!," Google says.
"Today's World IPv6 Launch, coordinated by the Internet Society, marks the day that participating websites, Internet Service Providers (ISP), and network hardware manufacturers switch on IPv6 permanently in parallel with IPv4," Google said in a blog post. "We’re proud to be one of the founding participants; virtually all Google’s services have been available over IPv6 for a while, but IPv6 access was only available to networks participating in the 'Google over IPv6' program. From now on, they will be made available to any IPv6 network on the Internet (well, almost any).
IPv6 still has a ways to go in terms of widespread adoption. Most ISPs haven't embraced the new standard yet, and the same is true for many websites. Not all home network equipment supports IPv6 either, though some can be upgraded with a relatively simple firmware updates. Others will need to be replaced entirely.
Are you ready? If you want to test your setup and infrastructure, head here.

Linked In Confirms Data Breach, Here's What You Can Do !

Phishers are coming out of the woodwork trying to bait panicked or otherwise unsuspecting LinkedIn users into supposedly 'confirming' their account, but what they're really doing is hijacking login credentials. They're also compounding the situation, whereby LinkedIn has now confirmed it suffered a data breach in which encrypted user passwords were compromised. Here's what you should do.
First and foremost, log into LinkedIn by typing the site's address directly into your browser and change your password. Don't click on any links in emails, even if they appear to be legit, which some of them do. It's unclear whether or not LinkedIn has begun notifying its members of the data breach via email, but according to security firm ESET, plenty of legitimate looking phishing emails are making the rounds.
The next thing you should do is change your password on any other site that uses the same login credentials. You should be using different passwords for different sites anyway, but if not, now's a great time to get into the habit of separating your online accounts.
According to reports, around 6.5 million LinkedIn passwords fell into malicious hands, so there's a good chance yours is one of them. If you want to know for sure, LastPass has an online tool that will compare the SHA-1 hash of your password with those that have been compromised. But is it safe to fork over your LinkedIn password to LastPass?
"The above tool asks you to enter your LinkedIn password, and then computes its SHA-1 hash and sends the result to LastPass.com to search the list of 6.5 million leaked password hashes. A hash is a mathematical function that is simple to perform in one direction, but very difficult to reverse. Meaning, the tool will convert your password into a series of characters in such a way that it will be very difficult to re-construct your original password," LastPass explains.
LastPass says that only the hash of your password is sent to LastPass.com's servers, not your actual password. And according to Mashable, LastPass doesn't store your hash on its servers. Still, if you're feeling uneasy, go ahead and change your LinkedIn password regardless.

Mozilla Firefox 13 Hits Release Channel, Brings New Homepage and Tabs !

The latest and greatest version of Mozilla's Firefox web browser -- Firefox 13 -- doesn't alter the browser scene with earth shaking innovation or groundbreaking feature additions, nor have we come to expect such gargantuan leaps in browser development since Mozilla swithced to a rapid release schedule. That said, there is a new version of Firefox on the Release channel, and here's what it brings to the table.
First and foremost, Firefox's new default homepage offers quicker access to bookmarks, history, settings, and more. The other notable change has to do with tabs. When opening a new tab, Firefox presents users with their most visited pages.
Other than those two additions, Mozilla mainly just sprinkled in a few changes to how the browser behaves and resolved a bunch of bugs, as it usually does with each new Firefox release. Restored background tabs are no longer loaded by default, a move intended to speed up the startup process, and smooth scrolling is now enabled by default. On the developer side, Mozilla said it made 72 total improvements to Page Inspector, HTML panel, Style Inspector, Scratchpad, and Style Editor.
The complete list of changes is here, and you can download the latest Firefox release here.

iSuppli: Hard Drive Prices to Remain Inflated Until 2014 !

Get ready to hear "Told you so!" from the conspiracy theorists, because according to research firm IHS iSuppli, mechanical hard disk drive (HDD) prices aren't expected to ease back down to pre-flood levels until 2014. That means two more years of inflated HDD prices for consumers, even though hard drive production is "rapidly recovering from the catastrophe" that ravaged Thailand last year.
IHS iSuppli says the average selling price for the entire HDD market skyrocketed to $66 in the fourth quarter of 2011 following the floods, up 28 percent from $51 in the third. It's held steady since then and will only decline marginally to $65 in the second quarter of 2012, the research firm predicts.
Is there really a conspiracy by HDD manufacturers to keep prices high? IHS iSuppli to seems to support the notion, saying that HDD production is rising and is expected to recover completely by the third quarter of 2012.
"HDD manufacturers now have greater pricing power than they did in 2011, allowing them to keep ASPs steady," said Fang Zhang, analyst for storage systems at IHS. "With the two mega-mergers between Seagate/Samsung and Western Digital/Hitachi GST, the two top suppliers held 85 percent of HDD market share in the first quarter 2012. This was up from 62 percent in the third quarter of 2011, before the mergers. The concentration of market share has resulted in an oligarchy where the top players can control pricing and are able to keep ASPs at a relatively high level."
So there you have it. Conspiracy theorists have some hard data to back their claims. Meanwhile, it's not difficult to find solid state drives selling for a dollar per gigabyte, or less, which is still a big premium compared to HDDs, but offer much better performance.

Best Stylish Smartphone for Girls | Amit Khajuria

Women are getting more attracted towards phone than men! Women are growing really fast and so are the mobile manufacturing companies like Samsung Apple and to cope up with the prevailing demands of the women, companies are constantly designing and releasing phones which women are expected to purchase but no one can predict a woman’s choice, I have to agree to it and so has to do the companies.
Women generally love colors like Pink, guys with cute faces etc. A woman has a lot offixed choices unlike boys, same goes in case of mobiles. If one mobile gets famous among women then there are almost 83% chances that other women will purchase it too, disregarding the things like specs and price, that’s what a survey says.
Micromax Bling 2 is a phone which was not buzzed a lot on the web but still, somehow,  it became so much famous among women that its hundreds of thousands of pieces have been sold out. The features of this small yet dashing phone are 3MP primary camera, 150MB internal memory, capacitive touchscreen etc. Expandable memory is 32GB via microSD card.

The phone supports data connectivity features like GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth, USB, WLAN etc. The best thing about Micromax Bling 2 is that it even support triple SIM. Micromax Bling 2 has got Android v2.2(Froyo) and the battery strength too is great, it’s 1000 mAh which makes it the worst phone in the list. Micromax Bling 2 is available for Rs.6,200.

Top 10 Resolutions To Make Your Girlfriend Happy | Amit Khajuria

Your resolution may be to limit your budget or bench-press Rs 10,000 a day, but those won't necessarily put a smile on your girlfriend's face. Here are the 10 best promises you can make to keep her as happy as ever.

10. Take her out with your friends
You know that she would love to hang out with you when you go out with your friends. Unless you intend on meeting other ladies or pulling some stunts that she might not condone, take your girl out with you. She will have so much fun and love you for it.
9. Don't drink, don't smoke
Chris Rock pointed out that men never go home straight from work, they got to go "drink something, meet someone, smoke something..." -- you get the idea. And we all know why. But if you really want your lady to be impressed, it's pretty simple: stop drinking, stop smoking.
8. Take her out more often
Especially if you do not like to take her out with your friends, then at least make sure that you take her out often. Yes, it would be nice to take her to restaurants, movies and shopping. But you need not $pend like crazy, just spend time with her; that is all she really wants.
7. Listen to her
Sounds simple. Just do it. Guys ask me "how can I make her happy?" No wonder you don't know, you don't listen to her. Successful relationships come down to two factors: how well one listens, and how well one communicates thoughts and feelings. Master one, and then deal with the other.
6. Don't lie to her: I know it's hard, but you have to learn to be honest about everything. You would be shocked to learn how easily things backfire. Especially if your circle of friends is small. Make a habit of being truthful in everything you say and do. You will love this in the end.
5. Get along with her friends
Okay, I get so many e-mails about your girlfriend's friends that do this and that... I know it may be hard, but you should see yourselves as partners in the quest to make your girlfriend happy, and not competition. You should leverage one another, not bicker like children.
4. You will cook something other than macaroni and cheese
Why is it that she brings you something to eat and drink when you come over out of the blue, but the most you have to offer her is macaroni and cheese on good days, and water and crackers in between. Whatever you do, buy a book, take some classes, or just use trial and error. She will be impressed and touched by your efforts.
3. Reciprocity
If she massages you, make sure you give her the backrub of a lifetime. If she would go to any length to please you, then you should do the same. So many women tell me how their men just do not return the favors. Instead of saying enough is enough, they take it all and accept the status quo. Men, don't hate me for saying this, but you will lose your woman if you keep that up.
2. Get her what she wants
I always get blasted for implicitly encouraging men to spend money on women. Well, the point is not how much you spend, but how you spend. I know that some of my most successful gifts cost nearly nothing; the idea is that you listened to her when she mentioned something and got her the perfect gift.
1. Get along with the folks
Surprisingly, most of our readers seem to get along with the parents of their loved ones; except for a few that simply seem to have vendettas and feel pure hatred. I know it's easier said than done, but while some girls actually get turned on by the bad boy who hates the parents, most girls really prefer that their men get along with their families. Less hostility makes for a happy girl.

Now come New Year's, figure out which resolution would make her most happy, and you'll make it through the year a very happy man.

EC-Council – CEH – Unethical Behavior MUst Read For Everyone

The EC-Council or ‘The International Council of E-Commerce Consultants’ as they like to call themselves offer a range of different services, mostly in the field of Information Security training and certifications. One of their certifications, the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) claims to aspire to training ‘ethical’ hackers.

"CEHv7 provides a comprehensive ethical hacking and network security-training program to meet the standards of highly skilled security professionals.”

What I have found is the way the EC-Council promote their CEH is less than ethical and damn right unethical.

A comment left on my blog quite a while ago (2010/04/20 at 6:18 am), looked fairly authentic, however, when investigating a little further it was clear to me that the comment was in fact SPAM.

"smith said…
Hey folks, Thanks for sharing your views, article includes a very good information about the ethical hacking, the most interesting job in the field ofcomputer security is being an ethical hacker,so i striven into the field of CEH, for more information on CEH check this link http://www.eccouncil.org/certification/certified_ethical_hacker.aspx”

The above comment was made from the following IP address which originates in Hyderabad, India, 202.53.11.130. The EC-Council’s India office is in the same city,http://www.eccouncil.org/contact_us.aspx. The email address left was smith.dyer@gmail.com.

After a few google searches its easy to spot the widespread use of spamming by the EC-Council to promote their Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification.

"Hi , i would say you to prefer the field of CEH, i would definitely say that the most interesting job in the field of security is being an Ethical Hacker,so you are already in the networking field of Networking field from the past 14 months so prefer CEH, for more information on professional training and Certification for CEH check this link http://www.eccouncil.org/certification/certified_ethical_hacker.aspx”

"Thanks for an insightful post. These tips are really helpful.

"Gunter,
Thanks for sharing such a nice information, yes even i too agree that NASA needs to get these sites secure as soon as possible.insecurity is growing briskly whilst advanced technology and networks. "Great Post!
Thanks for sharing such a nice article,it highlights a lot of the issues extant today.
Obviously, insecurity is growing briskly whilst advanced technology and networks. Hackers are more comprehensive, crumble the risk as a penetration tester and even get more.
For more information on CEH check this link http://www.eccouncil.org/certification/certified_ethical_hacker.aspx”

The list goes on and on, try your own Google searches, I’m certain you will find more, if you do, post them in the comments!

To me it seems more likely to be a person than a bot spamming the internet for the EC-Council as the comments are fairly unique however all have the same motive. The comments are usually left under the ‘smith’ username or a variant there of.

smith_dyer’s CNET profile is another example to the extent of the spamming,http://www.cnet.com/8705-4_1-0-2.html?username=smith_dyer

All the comments I have seen seem to be from February to May of 2010. A quote from the EC-Council’s own ‘Code of Ethics’, "Ensure ethical conduct and professional care at all times on all professional assignments without prejudice.”.

I had heard that the CEH certification has a bad reputation within the industry, I have never seen any of their material so I haven’t judged them personally before. What seems to me as blatant spamming by them puts into question their own ethics and integrity. How can a company offering such a certification be engaged in that kind of behavior, even if that behavior was only over a few months (I have no evidence to suggest it was any longer), their behavior is inexcusable.

I have emailed the EC-Council to see if they would like to pass comment, I will post their response, If I get one, in an update on this post. I’m not sure if I will get a response as they state on their website that they only reply to ‘company email addresses’ and not GMail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.

UPDATE 28.11.11 19:09 —

(Please note that the EC-Council blog post was changed by them however their original response can still be found in the comments section and via Google Cache.)

Jay Bavisi replied to this blog post in the comments section and on the EC-Council blog found here: http://www.eccouncil.org/blog/?p=86

UPDATE 29.11.11 02:11 —

I have spoken to Jay Bavisi on Skype about some further evidence that was given to me. He told me that he takes these matters extremely seriously and will launch an investigation as soon as possible. After speaking to Jay, it would seem to me that it was not behavior that is used by EC-Council and instead could possibly be down to some rouge individuals. Jay said he would pass further public comment once he has further evidence from his investigation, as the incidents seem to be two years old, evidence may be on the light side. I can honestly say that I found Jay to be a nice guy and believe him and his intentions.

UPDATE 29.11.11 20:00 —

Hopefully this will be my last update in this issue.

Early this morning a friend came across some evidence which directly linked the EC-Council to the SPAM left on my blog and across the Internet. With this concrete evidence, I contacted Jay Bavisi on the email address he left when he posted his comment on my blog. I told him that I had the evidence and asked if he would publicly apologize for his reply to my post. He replied within 20 minutes saying that he took this kind of behavior seriously within his organization however he saw no reason to apologize to me. I sent him the evidence.

He replied,

"Thank you for this information.
I have no reason to doubt your integrity but I would like to chat with you to explain something that I rather not write about.
If you could give me a number to call you, lets chat for 5 minutes to clear this up.”

We exchanged Skype accounts and I rang him. He explained to me that he had been made aware of the SPAM by a competitor of the EC-Council at around the same time it was being circulated (around 2 years ago). EC-Council SPAM had been left on the competitors web site and it looks as things got ugly. He told me that he thought my blog post may have been somehow related to that incident with his competitor which he named (I will not name them).

The above explains some of the oddness of his reply to my blog post.

He said that he believed it could have been a rouge employee of EC-Council from his India office. He promised me he would investigate and make a public statement within 24 hours. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and agreed. The conversation ended with me thinking he was a nice guy and a man of his word.

Around 16 hours later, I emailed Jay again, asking if he knew what time he would be posting his public statement. He replied, saying that they had been investigating all day and not come up with much evidence linking the SPAM to a specific employee (he believed one employee may have been impersonating another). He said that he may get back to me within 48 hours.

I told him that this was unacceptable, he gave me his word. A large corporation had publicly questioned my ethics after pointing out their own wrong doing. I told him that I would post the evidence I had within a few hours of his email. Up until posting this post I haven’t had a response.

A hacker group called TeaMp0isoN had leaked the r00tsecurity.org forum database last year which happened to contain the IP addresses of the users when they registered. One of those IP addresses was the same one that left the SPAM on my blog. The IP address belonged to the ‘rkvishwakarma’ username, who had registered with the ‘rajkumar@eccouncil.org’ email address, a long time employee of EC-Council.

Jay had told me that he thought it would unlikely that this particular employee was the culprit and he thought that it could possibly be another employee impersonating him.

I am very disappointed in the way the EC-Council have conducted themselves in this matter. I understand that there are investigations going on by others about other serious claims made about EC-Council. After this experience I have lost all faith in them. I hope Jay does make a public comment on this, I hope that it is better than how they have conducted themselves up until now, but somehow I doubt it.

I’d like to thank everyone for their support.
